Thank you, tenant advocates

Dear Editor: As a tenant in Marineview, one of the buildings impacted by the Rent Control Ordinance just passed by the Hoboken City Council, I want to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge and thank Annette Illing and Daniel Tumpson for their voluntary efforts on behalf of tenants. The slow progress of this Ordinance through the political machinations of the City Council and current administration required an enormous amount of patience, persistent research and complex analysis on their part. Both of these community activists donated their time and talent to making sure that the Council got it as right as it could under the circumstances. The activists urged that we all continue to remain vigilant in protecting the integrity of this ordinance. It was almost a year ago at Marineview that a group of tenants banded together under the voluntary leadership of Darcy Martinez to block a considerable rent increase. This endeavor also required patient diligence as well as donated money for legal assistance on the part of a group of tenants who ultimately succeeded. Recently, this group elected a much needed Board of Directors for its now official Marineview Tenants Association. Congratulations! We are blessed in Hoboken with many intelligent and dedicated community activists who make invaluable input on behalf of the community to the City Council and governing bodies. I urge Hoboken residents to become involved and support these voluntary efforts which attempt to preserve what is left of the human fabric of our multi-cultural and economically mixed population. Jean Forest
