Fans of Neil LaBute films are in for a surprise. His new movie, Nurse Betty, the story of an amnesiac soap opera fan in search of love in Los Angeles, is a vast departure from his earlier films, specifically the dark disturbing borderline offensive In the Company of Men.

With puffy cheeks and squinty eyes, Renee Zellweger plays Betty, who is not a nurse but a wife and waitress from Kansas. It should also be mentioned that Betty is a devoted fan of the soap opera A Reason to Love starring George McCord as Dr. David Ravell (Greg Kinnear). Her husband is Del (Aaron Eckhart); a slimy used car salesman who has the misfortune of sporting the most horrendous haircut in recent Hollywood history.

Early in the film, Betty witnesses two hit men (Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock as Charlie and Wesley respectively) scalp and murder her husband. Watching the whack leads to a bad case of post-traumatic stress syndrome, or, in soap opera vernacular, a bad case of amnesia.
