It’s Union City first

Dear Editor:

As a Union City resident I am thrilled that Mayor Brian Stack is putting more police out on patrol. Until he became mayor you rarely saw police out on our streets. They responded to calls for help, but there is no question that “crime prevention” suffered by their absence from our neighborhoods.

Considering that our force numbers over 200 and eats up a major portion of our city budget, it’s time that we start moving police officers out from behind desks and special assignments and out into the streets. If not, then we should start thinking of reducing the size of our force and saving taxpaying dollars.

The mayor is on the right track. Unlike his predecessor, he evidently believes that a police force should be serving the public and not a haven for political insiders and sweetheart assignments. By eliminating the take-home cars he is sending the right message. It’s Union City first.
