If elected, I will speak out for all the citizens of Hoboken

Dear Editor:

In my entire life, and possible before, I have never hesitated to speak out for what I believe in. Maybe that’s because I have never worked for the city of Hoboken. Then again, my husband has worked for the Hoboken Fire Department since 1981 and that never stopped me from publicly criticizing the actions of any administration (including my own uncle’s) when I felt criticism was deserved.

If I’m still standing after May 8th, (translation: in a runoff election for Council-at-Large), I promise you I will never hesitate to speak out or challenge the actions of any government official that I believe adversely effects the majority of the citizens of Hoboken.

I am fairly confident, as I’m sure you are, that someone whose last name begins with R will be mayor July 2001. In some ways these gentlemen are alike, one maybe a bit more arrogant and the other not always very forthright. As is our right since the Declaration of Independence, (actually for women and blacks, much later), the people of our community will ultimately decide who leads our community for the next four years.

Regardless of whom you support for mayor, I only ask for your consideration to represent you on the city council from 2001-2005. If elected, I wouldn’t have to worry about how the mayor would want me to vote. I needn’t have to worry about offending any contractors or developers.

While I respect all seven women (including myself) and the five gentlemen that you are running for Council-at-Large, I do believe I would do a better job of representing you on the city council than any one of them. If I didn’t believe that, I would never have put my husband and three daughters through all the aggravation of running for public office.

I’ve tried to the best of my ability to reach out to as many people as possible on a $7000 budget. Now it’s up to the residents that choose to vote on election day (I’m guessing about 12,500 people) to cast three votes for Council-at-Large. You decide if you want David Roberts, Anthony Russo or Daniel Tumpson to choose for you. The choice is really yours.

In the short time that we have on earth most people set some principles. Mine are crystal clear — my children and husband before all else. My students and basketball team are a close second. But I have more than enough energy, vigor and drive to tackle our number one community priority, retaining Hoboken’s neighborhood presence.

If you elect me to the city council you would be paying me from your hard-earned tax dollars approximately $17,000 to represent you on the city council.

I would work tirelessly to earn that money, but especially to gain your trust.

Sincere best wishes to all the candidates.

Terry LaBruno
Independent Council-at-Large Candidate
