Graduation time Hoboken High students sparkle from togetherness and involvement

After four years of hitting the books and learning the ins and outs of subjects like math, history and science, in the end, the senior class of Hoboken High School has learned that there is more than just academia involved in getting a great education; there is also team work and community activism.

This year, for the first time in the school’s history, the advisors and students came together and were able to raise funds and successfully plan a senior trip to Disney World.

“We’ve never been able to do something on this level before,” said senior class advisor Dawn Peguro about the three-day trip to central Florida. “The class really pulled together and in the end their hard work was rewarded with a wonderful trip that I don’t think anyone will ever forget.”

But even with all the fun in the sun in Orlando, the class was still focused and able to succeed in their studies. “They have worked real hard for four years and have definitely made this school a better place,” said Principal Ed Stinson from his office last week. “We have numerous student scholars that have been accepted and will be attending colleges like Stevens here in Hoboken, and some of the more prestigious colleges around the country. They have truly become quality citizens and will represent our high school well at the school of their choice or in the workplace.”

On June 1, the class came together for their senior prom at the Palace Stadium in Cliffside Park and shared one last elegant evening together before graduation. The event capped off four years that were hard but well worth the work for everyone associated in the class.

“This had been such a great group of kids it has made my job as advisor that much easier and has made it so rewarding,” said Peguro, who has sponsored the class since their sophomore year. “I may only have one child of my own, but by going through three wonderful years with this class, I feel like I have a whole class of children. Every time I think about graduation, it brings a tear to my eyes because I am just so happy for them.”

Hoboken high School will graduate approximately 150 seniors on June 25 at JFK Stadium at 5 p.m. Stinson
