Thanks Hoboken for coming out to vote!

Dear Editor:

I want to express my sincere gratitude to all the people of Hoboken who came out to vote last Tuesday.

Hoboken was an integral part in the election of our energetic new Governor, Jim McGreevey.

Once again, our city overwhelmingly re-elected resident and State Senator Bernard F. Kenny, Jr., a man that always puts his constituents before his own interests.

Tangible evidence of his dedication to our great city can be seen along our waterfront. It was Sen. Kenny that obtained the millions of dollars in Green Acres funding needed to build our public waterfront walkaway and Pier A Park. When it comes to public education it was Sen. Kenny that sponsored legislation allowing Hoboken to have two charter schools in just one square mile.

Hoboken is well served by this elected official of remarkable ethics and character.

It is also with great pride that I congratulate Councilmen Christopher Campos and Nino Giacchi.

While these two attorneys could easily be focusing solely on their prosperous law careers, they choose a dedication to public service. Whether it’s taking time to fight neglect at The Hoboken Housing Authority, reign in overdevelopment, ensure government efficiency or just helping a neighbor get a ride to a doctor, they are on call 24/7.

Locally, November 6 was not just a ward-based election, it was a referendum. A referendum whereby the voters sent a message that they support the platform of Mayor Roberts and his new administration.

Hopefully, these results will finally send a message to those perennial candidates that the good people of Hoboken reject the use and abuse of the electoral process for political revenge, leverage and the feathering of one’s own nests.

The City Council can now move forward more effectively for the people, thanks to landslide election victories over the likes of last Tuesday’s opposition.

Anthony Soares

City Council President
