Spectators had a difficult time finding a place to stand as family and well-wishers packed into City Hall on Thursday, Jan. 3 to witness Mayor David Roberts preside over a ceremony to promote eight Hoboken police officers and firefighters.
Roberts, who is also the city’s director of public safety, announced the promotions to replenish the ranks vacated by recent retirements in the Hoboken police and fire departments. Since the newly promoted personnel will enter their ranks at the lower end of the salary range, and the outgoing retirees leave at the higher end, there will be no increase in the overall departmental salary budget appropriations.
"In the aftermath of Sept. 11, we all have a newfound appreciation for the dedication of our uniformed officers who put themselves at risk daily to protect our safety," said Roberts at the ceremony. "On behalf of the people of Hoboken, I would like to thank these fine men for their years of service."
Retiring from the Police Department are Capt. Simeon Cumberbatch after 29 years of service and Capt. Rafael Cruz, also after 29 years of service. Retiring from the Fire Department are Deputy Chief Pat Sarnella after 29 years of service, Battalion Chief Ed Hodge after 30 years of service, and Firefighter Donald Carrie after 25 years of service.
Four promotions were made from within the Fire Department. Brian J. Greene and Fred Stankiewicz Jr. were promoted from firefighter to lieutenant. From captain to battalion chief went Richard Ladage and Angelo Migliaccio.
"As a former Hoboken firefighter, it gives me a special sense of pride to elevate these fine men within the ranks of their respective departments," said Mayor Roberts. "I am confident these men will serve with distinction and that they will carry on the fine tradition of the distinguished Hoboken Police and Fire departments."
Four promotions were also made within the police department. Promoted from sergeant to lieutenant are Antonio Julve and Charles Kosbab, and promoted from lieutenant to captain were Edward Cunning and James Tuminaro Jr.
