Dear Editor:
Here we go again! It’s election time. How do we know?
Well, we just received “Report to the People” from Bob Menendez. Even though the Primary Election is three months away, this Report has all the necessary elements of typical campaign literature. Unfortunately, this Report was paid for by the taxpayers again. He is quick to criticize President Bush’s budget and just as quick to promote the fact that he received an award for something and that he is the Chairman of the Democratic Caucus Task Force on Homeland Security. What a mouthful!
It is obvious that it is going to be hard for Democrats to counter President Bush’s political strength from the war and the economic recovery underway. It is also obvious that Democrats have not made gains on the economy, therefore they are busy searching for an election issue. However, they seem to forget that all the national polls indicate that the vast majority of Americans think that the country is most definitely on the right track, and the approval ratings for the military campaign hovers around 90 percent. Furthermore, this past Monday, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle gave a ringing endorsement to President Bush’s handling of the war. It took courage to admit this. Tom Daschle has my vote but unfortunately he does not represent my district or my State.
I believe that all voters of this great nation want to know whether the Democrats have any positive ideas and if they do, please bring them forward, and stop the bickering. It is not a time for pointless hit and run tactics. It is time to revisit all the various issues that were pushed aside by the vicious and cowardly attacks of September 11. Issues like Social Security, Medicare, Health Care Reform, Unemployment and many others issues. Let’s not forget that President Bush can propose any kind of budget he wants but the final responsibility falls on the U.S. Senate and the Congress, who are the ultimate gatekeepers. Therefore, it is not only the President’s budget but it is also yours. This system was designed by the founders of this great country and has been working flawlessly ever since. Traditionally, Democrats support more federal spending in general, but they have to find a sensible way to fund this spending spree. Unfortunately, the bill must be paid by the taxpayer (rich or poor) and no matter who sits in the White House.
