Dear Editor:
I’ve just read Maryann Caprio’s long letter of protest against a nasty policeman in Hoboken, and I sympathize fully with her and her husband’s travails.
I have had a few experiences myself with surly officers of the law; experiences which have led me to the conviction that most seem to come from unhappy backgrounds or bad families where concepts like politeness, culture and love perhaps didn’t exist. It’s a shame they can’t be a positive example for any of us.
It’s also sad that not one of the three policemen I asked of late know what the current law is regarding people riding their bicycles on the sidewalk. I was curious because I nearly got injured again the other evening on Washington Street.
Oftentimes the police appear to be working against rather than for us. I’d be curious to hear what anyone else thinks about these matters. I’m from England where the police are actually courteous, human, helpful and educated. What a difference!
