Quiet, peaceful New Year

Dear Editor:

For the first time in many years of living in Union City, New Years eve in my neighborhood was not upset by noise in the streets, beer bottles crashing, car tires screeching and police car sirens. It was actually quiet.

Most people don’t go crazy on New Years Eve. Most of us like to celebrate quietly with our family and friends, see the New Year, maybe with a toast, and then go to sleep. Some years in the past this has been impossible because of all the noise.

I really believe the difference this year was that Mayor Stack stuck to his guns and did not allow the bars to stay open all night. The ordinance closing the bars at 2 a.m. every night was one of the best things to happen in the city in a long time. I can’t think of any reason why people have to drink until 3 a.m. and I can’t see how this one hour can make a difference to the bar owners that it would force them out of business, which I don’t believe has happened.

Union City needs to become a family oriented community again and under Mayor Stack that is what is happening and I thank him.
