Mayor Roberts, here’s a solution to freeing up some parking spots

Dear Editor:

I would like to comment on the recent article in the December 15 issue of the Hoboken Reporter regarding the parking problem.

While I must admit there is definitely a problem, there seems to be no solution to fix this. The first step was to abolish the Parking Authority, which I believe down the road will help, but unfortunately we need a solution much quicker. The second attempt, putting the residential parking signs up throughout the town. I have not seen how this has relieved any parking worries. I still am not able to find a spot relatively close to my house, even with these new signs posted.

Also, I walk by many cars that do not have resident stickers or who just have temporary passes, and they are parked on the green side of the street. Why is that? Also, there seems to be lack of ticketing during the weekends when it seems to be a free-for-all.

The meeting the other night, according to the article, mentioned many solutions from more Zip cars to signs indicating where the municipal parking garages are located, to building more parking garages. The last thing Hoboken really needs are more parking garages.

In my opinion, why are there many empty spaces in the new condos/apartments going up? For every new building that goes up, when you sign the lease, or buy the condo, you must take the parking spot that comes along with it. Many people don’t want to buy the space because it’s too much money, so they rather buy the $10 parking sticker and park on the street. I understand the cost of a parking space may be high but they should be forced to take that space. This will allow for more spaces for those who do not have the convenience of a parking garage right under their building. To me that seems to be a very logical explanation to help alleviate some of the parking problems we are currently faced with.

Thank you.
