In the waiting room of Dr. Juan A. Perez’s office on Washington Street, there are several large decorative abstract oil paintings. The artworks are impressive and make the office look more like a trendy gallery than a mile-square city’s doctor’s office. When patients ask Perez about the paintings, he enthusiastically tells them he created them.
For more than five years, Perez has been finding time from his busy schedule (including teaching medicine) to paint abstract pieces. His work ranges from dark opaque colors to large bright pieces.
In "Carnaval," a large acrylic and oil canvas that hangs in his office, the artist tries to take the viewer on a journey to festive Brazil. It is simple in its nature colors, but complex in pattern. Lines jump out of the center of the piece like rays of light.
"Even though it looks like vase with flowers, it has floating sparks like fireworks depicting the movement of music," Perez said.
Perez, who lives in Hoboken, has a story for every painting he makes.
He began painting several years ago after presenting his works at local exhibitions and private showings. Having impressed several curators, he took the opportunity to study abstract painting with several instructors, which gave him a deeper appreciation for the artistry and skill of an abstract painter, he said.
His main body of work consists of oils and acrylics on canvas, yet nothing is off limits.
His fearless approach to paintings has contributed to a vast array of styles ranging from purely abstract to abstract botanical and landscape representations. Much of his work is inspired by his admiration for the purity and beauty of nature. He is relentlessly developing his style, and his use of materials and pallets is constantly fluid.
"The paintings help create a healing environment in the office," he said. "I find tranquility when I paint."
His paintings have quickly become a source of fresh new inspiration for private collectors. The work expresses the vast emotional content of any given moment. It speaks directly to each beholder through the hidden language of abstract art that transcends languages and visual boundaries.
