Dear Editor:
Governor James McGreevey has been quoted as saying that “there are certain functions of the State that are not discretionary. Caring for people with developmental disabilities is among them.” How then is it possible that despite this, the most vulnerable citizens in the state — those with developmental disabilities – are now included in budget cuts which will, in essence, retard and perhaps destroy the progress made.
The budget request to provide enlightened lifestyles is not an overwhelming figure; $41 million can continue to service the existing developmentally disabled population and will be able to extend much-needed services to an additional 300 physically disabled individuals; providing them with independent living, personal care attendant services, adequate dental care and habilitative services.
