Dear Editor:
A little more than two years ago, I ran for mayor on a progressive platform of inclusion and reform. Since assuming office in July of 2001, we have launched many key initiatives like the Master Plan, parks expansion, school improvements and others aimed at improving the quality of life for Hoboken residents. The common thread in all these programs was public dialogue and debate.
We have just finished an election cycle which, in itself, is a time of public dialogue and debate. While this period may derail the momentum of policy, it is healthy and necessary to set the city’s governmental compass. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Hoboken United slate of City Council candidates for standing with me during this process. I would especially like to thank the voters who participated on Tuesday.
Now it is time to move on, roll up our sleeves and work together for the betterment of our community. I am pleased that we will be able to continue with the agenda we mapped out two years ago. As a former council member, I fully understand the importance of debate and compromise. I am confident that the council which is seated on July 1st shares that belief and is willing to put policy above politics.
Hoboken is a unique community and we have so much opportunity before us. Even at a time when our national economy is in a down turn, Hoboken has firm commitments for over a quarter of a billion dollars for public improvements, ranging from the rehabilitation and re-adaption of our historic Erie Lackawanna Terminal to the construction of a Pier C Park. We have a commitment from the state to rebuild our public schools and have already implemented a curriculum infused with the high-tech knowledge of some of the best minds at Stevens Institute.
I pledge to continue seeking the opinions of our residents, community groups and City Council as we move forward. It doesn’t matter if an individual has lived in Hoboken for five months or five generations, every voice needs to be heard and considered.
Again, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the recently completed election process, and I look forward to getting back to business.
