Enjoy Company Chic eatery has retro look, fusion menu

Company is Hoboken’s comfortably delightful new restaurant downtown. It has a slick retro ’60s New York-style lounge décor and its large windows and bright ambiance create a welcoming feeling for patrons.Conveniently located on the corner of Garden and Newark streets, the fashionably-minded restaurant opened almost a year ago to rave reviews. Its popularity has increased since then.

"Many people tell us we look like a New York City place," said co-owner Robert Feinstein.

In fact, patrons have compared Company’s look to the trendy Cafeteria restaurant in Manhattan.

After hosting backyard parties at his Hoboken home for many years, Feinstein said he wanted to open a place that gave him a welcoming feeling, in addition to having excellent food. Feinstein, who is also a local architect, came up with the tropical café theme for Company before having a menu. Eventually, when the designs were done, he and his partner Annie Becker met with executive chef Kyle Inserra to come up with the American eclectic menu.

"We are confident about our food, and word has spread about what we offer," Feinstein said. "We felt like Hoboken’s best kept secret, now we want everyone to know about us."

The entrees range from $9 to $17 and patrons are encouraged to bring their own wine.

Fine dining

I began my dining experience at company with a goat cheese salad served with fresh walnuts, light spices and sweet vinaigrette. I also tried the crusted fried chicken served with greens. The chicken is gently fried to preserve the taste, and it is prepared with mild hot spices and fresh corn oil. Then I tried the delicious hanger steak served with chunky mashed potatoes. The sliced steak was a classic cut prepared medium well with risotto and broccoli. It was topped with sautéed sweet onions and marinated red wine with olive oil and garlic to add to the flavor.

Other entrees include the red snapper and the double cut pork chops, which are very popular.

For the fall season, Inserra plans to add heavier dishes on the menu.

"Our menu is seasonal. This fall we are offering more hard-hitting entrees in addition to our popular dishes," Inserra said.

I finished my Company experience with their homemade fresh cinnamon glazed sugar donuts dipped in a semi-freddo cappuccino. The donuts are meant to be dipped.
