Dear Editor:
On behalf of the members of the Jersey City Police Officers Benevolent Association, we are deeply disappointed with the verdict that was rendered in the trial of the Gavina Brothers in the death of Police Office Domenick Infantes, Jr.
We are especially troubled by the statements made by the defense attorneys, that Domenick was to blame for his own death, because he was a big man and had a few drinks on his day off. Contrary to the defense attorney’s portrayals, even Police Officers have the right to live a normal life when off duty, and yes, that may even include attending parties, socializing, enjoying holidays and special occasions with family and friends.
Police Officers live their lives knowing they may be called upon at any time, 24/7, to do the job they swore an oath to perform. Unequivocally, Police Officers choose to serve and protect both on and off duty. Domenick performed heroically and gave the ultimate sacrifice for the life he chose.
I would like to acknowledge all the fine citizens and organizations that have called to express their shock and outrage at the outcome of this trial. All are asking the same question – How can we show our support to the Infantes Family? We planned a candlelight vigil to show our unity and support on Friday, November 14, 2003 at 7 p.m. in Hamilton Park, which is located directly across from St. Francis Hospital in downtown Jersey City.
Your support goes a long way in healing the wounds left from this verdict.
