Sweet deals Retailers offer incentives to reel in early holiday shoppers

Merchants in Hoboken are offering promotions and hoping that area shoppers will remember to patronize their local Washington Street businesses this holiday season.

While the day after Thanksgiving marks the official start of the holiday shopping season, merchants will have a “Kick-Off the Holiday Shopping Season” promotion in conjunction with the City Hall tree lighting ceremonies this Tuesday, Dec. 9. The Chamber of Commerce and the city are sponsoring the inaugural event and plan to feature one-night, in-store discounts and special happenings.

There will be a meet and greet with Santa beginning at 4 p.m. at City Hall, followed by the Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony at 6 p.m.

Santa & his elves will then travel up and down Washington Street on the back of one of the city’s new fire trucks, followed by the local Hoboken High School Marching Band. Victorian Carolers will sing their way down Washington Street, stopping at various corners along the way.

After the holiday events from 7 to 9 p.m., merchants will be offering anywhere from 10 to 50 percent off the items in their stores. Examples of the promotions include but are not limited to: free candy canes, hot chocolate, hot cider, special discount coupons, or store promotions that will be good only on that night.

They are hoping that these incentives will help keep holiday shopping dollars in the local area.

Free parking

To make the entire holiday shopping season convenient and exciting for Hobokenites and area residents, the Hoboken Chamber of Commerce will offer four hours of free parking with vouchers every Saturday and Sunday from Nov. 29 through Dec. 21 between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hoboken Utility Parking Garage B at Second Street between Hudson and River streets.

In addition to the free parking, there will be a free shopper shuttle throughout Washington Street every weekend leading up to Christmas. Shoppers can catch the shuttle between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hoboken Utility parking garages at Hudson Street between Second and Third streets and the Midtown Garage on the corner of Fourth and Clinton streets. Vouchers for the free parking will be available at any of the participating merchants listed above. For a complete list, visit www.hobokennj.com.
