‘There’s no place like home for the holidays’

Dear Editor:

Powerful words for those of us that have missed the holidays while servicing our country, especially in a war zone. As we sit with our families this holiday season, be thankful you’re with yours, as most of the troops servicing this country are not. Be thankful for the freedoms we enjoy as many countries don’t offer those freedoms. Keep those troops in your prayers, that they too will soon be with their families to celebrate each and every holiday.

Our servicemen and women are now allowed to return to the states on leave (a short period of time off) and are provided free transportation to and from the United States only. If the serviceman/woman arrives at Dallas/Fort Worth and wants to get home to Hoboken, it is his/her responsibility to pay for the rest of the way.

Senator C. A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD), has started a program whereby, donated frequent flyer miles will allow our servicemen/women to come home for free. Nearly every major airline has signed on to this worthwhile program. You can help by donating a few of your frequent flyer miles from your account. In the three short months since this program started over 360 million miles have been donated. The site for making such donations is www.heromiles.org
