Guess who’s coming to Jersey City? Loew’s Theater showcase works of Sidney Poitier

In celebration of Black History Month, Friends of the Loew’s will present four acclaimed films starring one of America’s most honored and respected actors, Sidney Poitier.In 1963, Poitier became the first African-American to receive an Academy Award for best actor for his performance in Lilies of the Field. In 2001, Poitier was singled out once again by the Academy for an honorary award for his lifetime achievements, confirming his status as an icon in American cinema.

“We are proud to show the amazing films starring one of American cinemas most renowned actors. His (Poitier’s) works transcend film and affect society,” said Colin Egan, spokesman for the Landmark Loew’s Theatre.

The films shown include In The Heat of The Night, A Raisin in the Sun, The Defiant Ones, and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. On Feb. 27 at 8 p.m., In The Heat of The Night, which won four academy awards in 1967, will be shown. The matinee film on Feb. 28 will be the 1961 classic A Raisin In The Sun, which starred Poitier opposite Claudia McNeil, Ruby Dee and a young Louis Gossett, Jr. Then the featured film at 6 p.m. will be The Defiant Ones, the 1958 Academy Award winner for best screenplay and cinematography. It will be followed by Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, starring Katharine Hepburn. Admittance for each film is $6.
