Dear Editor:
This is an open letter to Mayor Roberts & City Council:
As a mother of the and 13 year Hoboken resident, every day I am confronted with the shortage of open space. My oldest son has baseball practice in a parking lot, talk about skinned knees! He’s nine years old and his games on school nights sometimes run until after 10 p.m. because there’s only one field for games. Often I leave the park with my younger children because there are so many kids there it’s dangerous You have older kids running on playground equipment designed for smaller kids, but who can blame them? There’s nowhere for them to even throw a ball without trampling on a soccer game or someone in a lawn chair.
Adults and kids often have to wait it out for hours for the few outdoor basketball courts. To play tennis after work, people have to go to Secaucus or pay a lot of money to join the courts at Stevens.
Now everyone prefers a park on 800 Jackson Street. That’s fantastic, let’s do it. We hear daily about the master plan and new parks but it seems wheels are spinning. Let’s get them pointed in the right direction. Every day more buildings are going up, bringing more wonderful people to this town, but the reality is they need the open space too.
I love living in Hoboken but when I start to weigh the pros and cons, the cons are starting to tip the scale when I consider space and recreation. Please let’s get some new parks built soon.
