Thanks to all, and we’ll move forward with a unified city

Dear Editor:

On behalf of the Roberts Team, Councilman Ruben Ramos, Jr., Councilwoman-elect Terry LaBruno, Councilman-elect Peter Cammarano and myself, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the June 14th runoff election.

The right of free speech and the right to vote are two tenets that we Americans hold dear to our hearts and are willing to take all measures to preserve. This past election cycle proved that despite attempts to divide our community, we are one city joined together by those born here and newcomers who have chosen to make Hoboken their hometown.

When I ran for Mayor four years ago, inclusion was a central plank in my platform. We opened the doors of government, met with community groups, and formed the Office of Constituent Services. We’ve held numerous community meetings on issues ranging from the Master Plan to open space initiatives and our 150th Sesquicentennial Celebration. I pledge to continue this process to ensure that the voices of all our residents are heard. This election proved that Hoboken is a very unique community of neighborhoods whose residents reflect all aspects of the American experience. I am proud to have been born and raised here and I am equally proud to be a husband and a father who is raising a family in this community.

We ran on a theme of uniting the entire community. This message resonated and I would like to thank my opponents, especially those who stood behind me during the runoff. Unification is a process of give and take. We have made great efforts but there is still more we can do.

Hoboken is moving forward. We are implementing the first Master Plan in two decades to guide current and future growth, we are improving our public schools’ curriculum and facilities, and we are building new parks. We are attracting millions of dollars in private and public investments, ranging from a new W Hotel to a renovated Transit Terminal. This administration has nourished key governmental relationships to accomplish many of these achievements.

From my first day in this office I have felt humbled to serve as your Mayor and I do so every day with a great sense of pride. I have been honored to serve the public in this capacity and I am extremely pleased that you have entrusted me with another term. On behalf of the Roberts Team and myself we pledge to forge ahead to improve the quality of life for all Hoboken residents and fulfill our oaths of office with honesty, integrity and compassion for every citizen.

Mayor David Roberts
