If you are a long-suffering procrastinator, chances are you haven’t filed your taxes yet. Rather than wasting many hours of your precious free time waiting in line at one of the seasonal tax offices or struggling over forms yourself – why not get your taxes done at your favorite local? The company “Tavern Tax” will be preparing tax returns in a few of Hoboken’s bars.
Tavern Tax
Carmine A. Sodora, a CPA and a CEO of an accounting firm in New Jersey, was looking for an innovative take on taxes. His company wanted to expand their client base, but also to find a way to appeal to people who might find the idea of doing taxes tedious, stressful, or intimidating. And really, who doesn’t?
According to Sodora, he was thinking about young professionals when he came up with the idea of preparing taxes in a bar.
On the company website, it says, “Why should you be stressed about your income tax return; isn’t that what you pay us to do?”
And what could be more relaxing than enjoying a pint or two while a certified accountant figures out your return?
It’s easy
According to Sodora, clients only need to bring their current W-2 form, last year’s tax return, and a valid ID. Or they can choose to send the information to the company office beforehand and arrange to pick up the completed return in the bar.
Taxes are filed online as the company is an authorized IRS e-file provider. If clients are not comfortable sending taxes that way, they can arrange to send them the traditional method of snail mail.
It takes about 40 minutes to an hour to complete an average return.
If you are in a hurry, you can choose to have your information sent to you in two business days. Peter Rimassa, a Secaucus resident, recently had his tax return completed at Duffy’s in Hoboken.
“It’s a little bit more convenient to come to a bar than to go to an office and wait for hours,” said Rimassa. “It’s the next logical step.”
