The Gaslight, 400 Adams St., in Hoboken has been keeping locals happy with delicious meals and lush cocktails served in three cozy rooms. John Martello and Claude Persico have operated this mainstay restaurant for a decade.
The atmosphere
Each of the three separate areas has a different feel to it, giving the diner a new experience. In the cozy front bar room, the dark highly polished wood bar makes a nice backdrop for red walls and brick accents. The more intimate lounge area is splendid with rich shades of orange and burgundy, ornate mirrors, and amber lights.
In the far back is the larger dining room, which is decorated in cool shades of sage green and accented with iron-clad candles. The white tea lights placed on every table add to the glow of the room. Swaths of silk are draped from the large ceiling skylight. This room makes one feel that he or she has stumbled into a garden party. The friendly staff provides excellent service. You won’t yourself wondering where your waiter has gone off too here; there is always someone on the floor to help.
The appetizers
Immediately after sitting down, customers are given fresh, warm Italian rolls served with crushed red pepper and virgin olive oil. Once trying this, you’ll never go back to butter! To eat, we started with the stuffed peppers and the seafood bisque.
The hot cherry peppers are marinated in virgin olive oil and stuffed with fresh mozzarella and prosciutto. These delicious, spicy peppers are infused with flavor and go great with the crispy bread.
The rich soup is made with a cream base and tomatoes. There are large pieces of sea bass and lobster that give the soup great texture. It was fantastic! Diners will appreciate the homemade goodness that is in every bite.
Other appetizers include: fried calamari, chicken tenders, backed clams, nachos, fried ravioli, quesadilla, crab cakes, asparagus parmigiana, eggplant rollantine and more.
In addition, there is a wide selection of salads to start with if you prefer something lighter.
The appetizers are priced from $6 to $9.
The entrees
The main courses will delight anyone that wants a feast of a meal. We ordered the surf & turf and the Kansas City Steak, both of which were specials that night.
The excellent Filet mignon came with a Brazilian lobster tail. The meat was grilled to perfection and didn’t have an ounce of fat on it. There was nothing but the tender, juicy filet. The lobster was terrific with the drawn butter. Both required no additional seasoning.
The Kansas City Steak, which is seasoned black angus beef, was topped with a creamy, lobster Béarnaise sauce. This is a hearty, steak. It was even better with the rich sauce.
Both came with a large side of potatoes and baby carrots and string beans that were lightly seasoned with butter. Next, we sampled the barrel select chicken and the Frutta Di Mare.
The boneless breast of chicken was loaded with flavor. The chicken is grilled and then baked in white wine teriyaki sauce. It is topped with tender asparagus and roasted red peppers.
Diners have a choice of red or white sauce for the Frutta Di Mare. It is loaded with calamari, jumbo shrimp, Chilean sea bass, little neck clams and mussels that are served over a bed of linguine. This is a large dish that is sure to satisfy seafood lovers.
Other dishes include: chicken marsala, chicken francaise, veal chops, pork chops, New York Strip steak, shrimp scampi, shrimp oreganato, Atlantic Mahi Mahi, tuna steak, a variety of pasta dishes and much more.
The entrees are reasonably priced from $10 to $25.
For those with a smaller appetite there are hot and cold sandwiches and grilled specialty pizzas, which are priced from $5 to $8.
In addition to the regular menu items, the Gaslight offers delicious daily specials.
And…
What dinner would be complete without dessert? We sampled the homemade, runny chocolate chip cookie. This fabulous dessert had melted chocolate on the inside and was served with fresh raspberries and whipped cream.
The Gaslight has great specials all week long including: steak night on Monday, ladies night on Tuesday, wine lovers Wednesday, and brunch on Saturday and Sunday.
In addition, they also have fantastic drink offers including: half price martinis on Wednesday and margaritas on Thursdays.
