Open letter to Governor Corzine

Dear Governor Corzine:

I do not know if you are the appropriate person to contact, and I do not know if you have the authority on this issue, but I would like to make you aware of a series of development plans that will hurt the town where I live, Weehawken.

Weehawken just inaugurated the new ferry terminal on the Hudson River.

The existing Port Imperial Parking lot will be used to build several high rises, destroying the river view and causing severe consequences. The Weehawken Boulevard East was built in 1893, this will be the end of it. Hundreds of people stop, walk and take pictures on the Boulevard East every day, the Manhattan view is astonishing.

Instead once again: no parks, no schools, more people, more garbage, more traffic, more pollution.

I was born in Italy and New Jersey is unfortunately world famous also in the States to be “the armpit of America.” I strongly disagree with this nickname, but projects like the Port Imperial development, hurt the overall landscape of our New Jersey. Townships like Hoboken and Fort Lee learned the lesson and have beautiful parks facing the Hudson River.

Weehawken instead will be a huge dorm. What’s the real benefit of this project? Who is getting rich with this project?

Unfortunately our City Council and Mayor are so shortsighted and will leave without a legacy and will be remembered as the Mayor that cemented Weehawken.

Great mayors, governors and local politicians are remembered for great actions and improvement not to fill every square inch with tasteless, sterile looking high-rises.

I just hope you can do something for Weehawken and for our New Jersey.

Best regards,
Walter Taffarello
