Slow news week in West New York!

Dear Editor:

This letter is in response to Nicholas Millan`s Jan. 13, 2008 article titled “Vega pulled over.” It seems to have been a very slow news week in West New York for this nonsense to have been published. It seems that The Hudson Reporter is making a big deal out of something that really does not deserve that much attention.

On December 22, 2007, Mayor Sal Vega seems to have been driving in the Fairview area when he was pulled over by a Fairview Police Officer for making an improper left turn. The police officer made Mayor Vega aware of the mistake that he made & chose not to issue a ticket. How many NJ drivers get pulled over every single day for making minor mistakes while operating a motor vehicle? Too many to count, in my opinion! In the article it also quotes the Chief of Police in Fairview saying that “Out of 13 vehicles pulled over that night, there were only a total of seven summonses and the rest where issued verbal warnings,” which is what the police officer gave Mayor Vega, a warning.

Mr. Millan also reports that there are local politicians spreading rumors/ lies against the Mayor. It seems as though certain “local officials” are trying to make this into a bigger issue. I am very sure that if this where a larger offense the Fairview Police Department would have taken action.

It is very sad but true that people would stoop so low and try to smear an honorable man like Mayor Silverio A. Vega. If the Mayor had to be subject to a front page headline, shouldn’t these “local officials” be named in the article? If they have the audacity of spreading these rumors then names should be named! Chances are that these “officials” have zero credibility and have nothing to back up the rumors that they are spreading. Another question I have is if this incident happened on December 22, 2007, why did it take the West New York Reporter so long to print this? Could it be that the Hudson Reporter is trying to make something out of nothing?

The head line says it all, “Vega pulled over”. Very few drivers can say that they have never been pulled over. The bottom line is that no one is perfect and no one is a perfect driver. We all make mistakes on the road. This incident was nothing but a minor mistake. I am sure that the Mayor will from now on be extra careful when operating a motor vehicle.

I am a fan of The Hudson Reporter and read it every single week. Although I understand that The Mayor is held to a very high standard, I feel that there are much more important things to report.

I would like to close this letter with this: To the person(s) spreading the false fabricated allegations against the Mayor of WNY, do not throw stones, we all know that you live in a glass house!
