To the Editor:
In a letter printed last week in the “Bayonne Community News,” Councilman Gary La Pelusa stated that he never met me, but he did. I congratulated him at City Hall, but he didn’t want to know me because I am not a Chiappone supporter. Again, he saw me at Mayor Doria’s Senior Citizen Barbecue. He stood alongside of the mayor, never leaving his side, and giving the impression that the two of them were buddies when all along he and Chiappone were obstructionists on the City Council. I also spoke to Mr. La Pelusa on the phone. He called me a “pawn” and hung up. I am not a “groupie.”
Maybe my letter had an effect on La Pelusa since he voted alone against the Trammel-Crowe and shocked Chiappone when he tabled the vote on the 34th Street Fire House.
Mr. La Pelusa stated that he has “helped a significant amount of people.” Well, one taxpayer, Catherine McGrath, who wrote a complaint to this column, needed help. He didn’t help. As a member of the Senior Advisory Board, I wrote to him since he is her councilman. Mr. La Pelusa did not call her. He had someone else call. The result was “zip, nada, nothing.”
Mr. La Pelusa wants to question me about his devotion to the citizens of Bayonne. Why doesn’t he question the Matrix Consulting Group from New England that wants to give Bayonne a public safety director and eliminate the department heads? Where is the efficiency in this move? Bayonne needs to eliminate the school crossing guards and hire more police officers to patrol our streets and to stop criminals from selling drugs. The Bayonne police caught illegals selling Crystal Meth on Fifth Street and the Boulevard, not far from a school. Safety first.
Lastly, Mr. La Pelusa stated, “Most people that know me can attest I put many hours into being councilman.” Well, Mr. La Pelusa, I know one person that can attest to my character, and that’s senior staff writer Al Sullivan, who autographed his book, “Everyday People,” to me, and wrote, “To Evelyn, who pursues truth even when it gets her in trouble. Truth always hurts, and is always right.”
