Di VITO, EVELYN

Di VITO, EVELYN. A private funeral service was held for Evelyn Di Vito, 88, who operated the Pebble Beach tavern, a Union City mainstay. She died on Jan. 13 at New Seasons of Voorhees Assisted Care residence, Voorhees. She was born in Brentwood, Long Island. She was an honors student at Washington Grammar School and Union Hill High School in Union City. Upon graduation, she pursued a career as a night club dancer, performing in clubs in New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore. She met her late husband, Frank, a then-popular big band singer who performed under the name Frankie Lester, in Philadelphia. While Frank pursued his singing career on the road, Evelyn eventually took over operation of her parents’ neighborhood tavern, which became Pebble Beach. Known for her acerbic wit and sense of humor, she was the feature attraction until her health required her to retire at the age of 86. Survivors include her son, Gary F. Di Vito; her brother, Joseph Kovacs.
