Dr. Joycelyn Elders to speak at HCCC

Controversial former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders will be speaking at Hudson County Community College on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. in the College’s Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk St., in Jersey City. Dr. Elders – who was the first African-American and the second woman to serve as Surgeon General – will speak on “The Path to Breaking Barriers.”
Dr. Elders served as director of the Arkansas Department of Health in
1987 under then Gov. Bill Clinton, and later in 1993, as U.S. Surgeon General when Clinton became President.
As surgeon general, Elders developed a reputation for controversy when she became a proponent of legalized drugs and the distribution of contraceptives in schools. In 1994, Elders said she believed masturbation should be taught as an alternative to riskier forms of sexual activity.
The HCCC event is FREE, but tickets are required for admission. Phone
