Correcting information regarding the Secaucus School District

Dear Editor:
I am writing to you at this time to correct information pertaining to the Secaucus School District that was reported in the Education column in your March 1st edition. Mrs. Randina, Superintendent, did not request nor has the Secaucus Board of Education approved the hiring of an assistant superintendent. Mrs. Randina requested that the Board of Education approve a new position titled Director of Education and Technology. The Board unanimously approved her request for this new position at their October 23, 2008 meeting. To date the position has not been filled, and any future action will depend on the satisfaction of other educational needs in the school budget. This newly created position combined the job requirements of previously staffed mathematics and science supervisor positions, and supports the integration of technology district wide. Funding for this position was made possible by the reallocation of budgeted funds previously used for the salary of the Supervisor of Building and Grounds. This position is currently vacant and will not be filled.
I deferred comments on the budget and staffing issues until the public hearing on the budget which will be held in late March. There is a long process involved in the preparation of the budget and submitting it to the public. The budget I prepare is reviewed by Mrs. Randina, the Board of Education Finance Committee, the entire Board of Education and finally by the Executive County Superintendent of Schools. Once the review process is completed, the budget is submitted to the public at the hearing. My decision not to comment on the budget or any personnel matters it may contain was appropriate in light of the process involved and where we are in that process.

Very truly yours,
Edward J. Walkiewicz
Business Administrator & Board Secretary
