A funeral service was held April 8 for Vincent Egizi, 80. He died April 4 at Rutland Regional Medical Center, Rutland, Vt. Born in West New York, he had been a life long resident of North Bergen, and was a well-known athlete and local coach. He was retired, and had been an embroidery foreman working for J.C. Embroidery in Fairview, for 45 years. As a young man, he was a local hero on the high school football scene, playing for Memorial High School in 1946 and 1947. As a small but powerhouse fullback, Vincent was an All-County player under the tutelage of Joe Covielo. He was among the leading scorers in the county. He was also a member of the Satans, Lake Wood’s and Cameron’s local clubs. After graduating from high school, he married his high school sweetheart, Gloria, served in the U.S. Navy for two years, and settled down in Union City and North Bergen, where he raised five children. He continued his interest in local sports throughout his adult life, serving as a coach for the North Bergen Pop Warner League, coaching the Jets and Eagles to championships. He also excelled as second baseman for the Flying Dutchman, Men’s Fast Pitch softball. To many of the local parents and kids today, he will be remembered and missed as “Pops.” He was the husband of the late Gloria (Brunkel) Egizi; the father of Richard, Vincent III, Dean, Anthony Egizi and Lynn Finkbohner; the brother of Marie Marzocchi, and the grandfather of Shane, Tighe, Rebecca, Sydney, Bella and Sofia.
