AP: Hoboken negotiating with six unions; will cut workforce 10 percent

The Associated Press just picked up on the story that Hoboken is considering laying off 10 percent of its workforce, although the math doesn’t necessarily add up.
From the story:
“Hoboken city officials say the city will trim its work force by 10 percent unless unions are willing to make health care concessions… The announcement comes as the city prepares to enter into negotiations with its six municipal unions. Hoboken Corporation Counsel Steve Kleinman says some job cuts may be avoided if union leaders agree to changes in employee health coverage. Hoboken, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, has more than 40,000 residents.”
The story says that the city has 600 workers, and that it plans to lay off 21 city workers, demote 20, and perhaps cut another 15. Well, that adds up to 36 layoffs and 20 demotions, which isn’t exactly a 10 percent cut. However, they are also considering some additional police and fire cuts, which may add to the total.
The town says the cuts should trim $1.5 million from the budget.
Here’s the full story.
