The following is an open letter to Mayor Nicholas Sacco:
I read with interest the article about the proposed Riverview development on North Bergen’s last piece of riverfront land. I was especially delighted to read your quote in the North Bergen Reporter of Sunday, April 19, that “there was still a chance for a small waterfront park.” As I’m writing this on Earth Day, TV programs are filling the airwaves with warnings of unwise land use. Choking traffic, flooding and health problems are the clear results of too much concrete and too many cars. We don’t need more apartment towers and parking lots; we need more trees and open space. The time is urgent, the stakes are high, and we have a great opportunity to reverse a potential mistake. Mayor Sacco, I urge you to take the long view for our neighborhood and beyond. Please make this Earth Day really count for the greater good.
