In Hoboken and Jersey City, the year 1987 saw racism, murder, and a string of violent incidents aimed at Asian Indians.
In 1987, a local daily newspaper wrote a small-time story about beatings of Indians in Jersey City. In response, someone penned a letter to the paper threatening that a gang called the “Dotbusters” would drive the Indians out of Jersey City.
Within a few weeks, two Indian men were severely beaten in the area without provocation.
One Jersey City man, Navroze Mody, 30, a manager at Citicorp, was in Hoboken drinking with a friend. He was beaten into a coma and died three days later. However, the prosecutor’s office contended that this incident was not related to the “Dotbusters” threat. Four teenagers were charged with the crime, and three were sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The same week, Kaushal Saran, also 30, was attached without provocation on a Jersey City street corner by a group of assailants. While he survived, he was seriously injured for the rest of his life. Meanwhile, his assailants were acquitted.
Last week, Jersey City beat reporter Ricardo Kaulessar located Saran — in Oklahoma. Saran has tried to rebuild his life but still has not completely recovered.
