A memorial service was held May 10 at St. Matthews Evangelical Lutheran Church, Jersey City, for Marian Courtney, a prolific New Jersey writer, journalist, playwright, and professor. She died at the age of 82 on May 4 at the Hamilton Park Healthcare Center, Jersey City. During the 1960s and 70s, Ms. Courtney was a staff reporter for The Jersey Journal, and wrote news and feature stories, and often covered City Hall in Jersey City. She also wrote as a freelancer for many other East Coast news and magazine outlets, including The New York Times. She won numerous journalism awards. In the 1990s, Ms. Courtney taught courses on business writing and the humanities as an adjunct professor in the Department of English at New Jersey City University. She was also a public relations writer for the Jersey City Police Department in the 1990s. Ms. Courtney is survived by her three children: Jeanne, Courtney Brown and his wife Isabella, and Douglas and his wife Elizabeth; as well as three grandchildren, John, Lindsey, and Aziz.
