A funeral mass was offered July 13 at Our Lady of Mercy, Jersey City, for Severo “Bernie” Oades, 72. He passed away July 7 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. He was a man of great talent. Bernie was a self-taught pianist who took the world by storm in 1961 after winning a National Championship talent competition which led to 12 years of solo performances around the world, including the Royal Palace of the King of Thailand. As an accomplished musician and composer (ASCAP), he recorded over seven albums and founded the present day Filipino band, “D’Executives,” in 1973. Bernie’s genuine nature, passion, big smile and even bigger heart drew in such fondness and love from family and friends. He spent his last years on music composition, oil painting and artistic flower arrangements. He was the husband of Erlinda Oades; the father of Geraldine Oades Sese and Bernadette Oades Sumague; and grandfather of Bernard Cortes, April and Richard Sese, Joshua and Jon Sumague. Services arranged by the McLaughlin Funeral Home, Jersey City.
