Healthy hints

Dear Editor:
If you have acid reflux (heartburn, etc.), chewing gum is an effective remedy. When you chew gum it increases the amount of saliva in the mouth. Saliva contains many compounds that provide protection for the esophagus. These include: proteins, mucin, prostaglandin E2, and epidermal growth factor.
You should never spit your saliva out of your mouth. Your body needs the saliva. It is also a defense against harmful bacteria.
On the other hand, if you cough up phlegm, you should spit it down a toilet bowl and flush it away. Do not spit it on the sidewalk or street. If you are outside, spit it down a sewer.
Also, cover your mouth when you cough. Use a handkerchief, tissue, napkin or paper towel when you sneeze or blow your nose. Not your hands or your clothes. And remember to wash your hands as often as possible.
