Former state Assemblyman and Secaucus Councilman Anthony Impreveduto, 63, died on Aug. 5 from apparently complications from heart surgery.
Impreveduto, who once said he never intended to run for political office, became a surprise grass roots Secaucus candidate in the early 1980s, going on to win a seat as councilman in the 2nd Ward, and later as an assemblyman for the 32nd district. In 1992, he lost his council seat to “reform” candidate Dennis Elwell, but Impreveduto continued to serve in the state Assembly until 2005.
A 1967 graduate of Weehawken High School, Impreveduto grew up in Hoboken, where his family operated a food store. In the late 1970s, the family relocated to Secaucus where they opened a catering hall. His political career came to an end in 2004 when he pleaded guilty to using contributions to his campaign for personal use.
Impreveduto recently had heart procedure to install a stint, and was reportedly recovering well prior to his death on Aug. 5.
The senior citizen building Impreveduto Towers is named for Impreveduto’s father, Rocco, who was very active in local Democratic politics and civic life and passed away in 1997.
