Dear Editor:
On my lunch hour this week I stopped in at Carlos Bakery. Upon entering, actually not really entering the line was out the door. I observed many people carrying cameras, & others were standing on their toes to look over the counter at the help. Everyone was a buzz, “I got a picture with him,” “I found him in the back alley & he posed with the kids,” He’s so nice in person,” “Oh, look that’s one of his sisters,” “Do you think we can take a cake on the plane,” clearly these were not Hoboken people. My mind wandered taking me back, at the risk of showing my age, to before Buddy was born & his father, Buddy & his mom, Mary had a little bakery on 4th & Adams & I was a loyal customer. Just as I contemplated leaving so I wouldn’t be late getting back to work, one of the girls behind the counter called out to me “Miss, Mary told me to take your order.” I don’t know where Mary was, I couldn’t see her to thank her, but she somehow spotted me in the crowd. With all that has gone wrong in Hoboken these days, I guess I just thought it was a little perk for being a true Hobokenite, which by the way I am proud to be. So I say thank you, Mary, with your angelic smile & looks of a woman half your age, it is refreshing to be recognized in the crowd. And to the Carlos “Fan Club” I say please keep in mind there would be no Cake Boss, if not for Mary, the Cake Boss’ Mom!
A loyal customer & true Hobokenite,
Gail Miranda
