Question: In high school volleyball, referee notices players wearing bobby pins or metal barrettes during warm-ups. Legal during practice and game?
Answer: Metal barrettes are illegal at anytime; referee, via head coach, will direct player to remove jewelry during warm-ups without penalty. If illegal items is discovered during set, team is assessed an unnecessary delay penalty (timeout) and item will be removed. This season, unadorned bobby pins, no longer than two inches, may be worn for hair control. (Rule 4, Sec. 1, Art. 5)
Question: Can players wear a turban, yarmulke or other extended headwear?
Answer: Items are legal if worn for religious reasons. Players are required to provide written approval from state association to wear items for religious reasons. (Rule 4, Sec. 1, Art. 6, casebook)
