Plan for Alzheimer’s memory walk at LSP

Dear editor,
Every 70 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. As many as 5.3 million people have the disease, and it’s the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and fatal brain disease that destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies or social life. Currently, there is no cure; but there is hope.
A worldwide effort is under way to find better ways to treat, delay onset, or prevent Alzheimer’s disease from developing. The Alzheimer’s Association (www.alznj.org; 1.800.883.1180) is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research. We’re here to help. Our services include: a 24/7 toll-free telephone Helpline (offers help in 140 languages); MedicAlert®+Alzheimer’s Association Safe Return® program; respite care program for caregivers; professional and community education programs; support groups; and more. For years, we have provided vital support to the Hudson County community, and recently, we’ve increased our outreach in the area in response to an ever-growing demand.
As a part of this increased outreach, we’ve decided to bring the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs to Hudson County’s Liberty State Park. The Liberty State Park Regional Memory Walk (Saturday, October 31) will be one of four Memory Walks hosted this fall. Bringing this event to Hudson County will help us in our effort to continue to provide Hudson County residents with the information and support they need to face the everyday challenges of this devastating disease.
