To the Editor:
In a letter to the editor dated Sept. 9, 2009 (re: handicapped child), I believe this letter refers to me. I am writing to correct a few errors the writer has stated in the aforementioned letter.
First of all, this is a bowling league, not bowling games as referred to in the previous letter, or open bowling, where you have the option to come and go as you please. This league is not in any way affiliated with the Ability Day Camp nor the Department of Parks and Recreation of the City of Bayonne. It is a separate entity.
The Hudson Ability Bowling League was started more than 40 years ago by the late Robert Blum. I have been secretary of this league for the last 21 seasons and being a league, there are certain rules to follow.
Each team bowls a competitive team three games every week for 32 weeks, with the outcome determining the standings of each individual team. The league bowls from September to May, not the other way around.
In the case of the handicapped child leaving before the three games were bowled, not only was the player being unfair to her teammates, she disrupted the league and that was reason enough for dismissal. You can leave anytime in open bowling, but you bear certain responsibilities when you join a league.
Right now, I have 60 bowlers, three on a team or 20 teams, and I do not have an open slot for another bowler. It would be less fair for me to take anyone in the league when they would not have a team to bowl on. Perhaps at a future date there will be openings in this league, but right now I am full to capacity.
