JC Artists Studio Tour returns
Jersey City’s Artists Studio Tour returns this weekend (Oct. 3 and 4), turning the city on the west bank of the Hudson into a cultural destination par excellence.
Now in its 19th year, the tour will feature an estimated 600 artists displaying their works of all shapes and sizes in locations around the city.
The tour is presented by the city of Jersey City, the Jersey City Museum and the arts organization Pro Arts, and is sponsored by entities including the Hudson Reporter newspaper group. The art tour kicks off on Oct. 2 with a reception at Grace Church Van Vorst on Erie and Second streets at 6 p.m. The closing party for the tour is on Oct. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Jersey City Museum on Montgomery and Monmouth streets.

Bark in the Park event
The 2009 Bark in the Park Dog Walk will be held on Sunday, October 11, on the South Lawn of Liberty State Park (immediately behind the historic Rail Terminal) in Jersey City. If it rains, the event will move inside the Terminal which is located just off Audrey Zapp Drive. Festivities kick off at 11 a.m. and go until 3 p.m.
Adults and children are invited to bring their dogs for a day of fun, music and food. The characters from Cirque du Soleil’s WINTUK will kick off a non-competitive, two-mile dog walk at the start of the day’s fun.
People participating in the dog walk are encouraged to enlist sponsors to help support Liberty Humane Society. The top three fundraisers will receive prizes, and the top female or top male canine raising the highest pledge totals will be crowned Lord or Lady Liberty of Bark in the Park. Besides the dog walk, the day’s activities will include dog competitions and dog agility demos along with a full day of music, food, shopping, and entertainment.
Pre-registration is $15 per adult and includes one dog ($5 for a second dog with a limit of 2 dogs per person). Children under 18 are free. Please go to www.libertyhumane.org to register online. Dogs who register early will be given free micro chipping, an important safeguard for your family’s four-legged members should they ever become lost or stolen. Feral Cat Fundraising Campaign
Companion Animal Trust announces it is launching Fix a Feral Cat, a coordinated marketing and fundraising campaign to raise funds for the Neighborhood Feral Cat Initiative’s Trap-Neuter-Return low cost spay neuter program.
Companion Animal Trust, Inc., located in Jersey City, is a 501c3 non profit animal welfare organization whose mission is to protect and help homeless animals.
The Neighborhood Feral Cat Initiative was introduced in March 2009 to raise public awareness about the community feral cat crisis and to provide practical ways to address the issue through free Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) training workshops. In the first seven months 110 people have become TNR certified and 300 feral cats have been spayed or neutered through the low cost program.

Charity shopping event for local home care service
Stretch your shopping dollars and lend a hand to a local non-profit on Saturday, Oct. 17, when Visiting Homemaker Service of Hudson County takes part in the annual Shop for a Cause event at Macy’s Newport Centre in Jersey City.
Tickets for the event, which are available for $5 through VHS representatives, earn shoppers significant discounts on the designated shopping day for a wide range of Macy’s items including most apparel, accessories, shoes, jewelry, house wares, luggage, furniture, rugs, mattresses and electronics.
Participants will be provided with a coupon for 25 percent off any one item in the store excluding a small number of items, as well as a certificate to save between 10 and 20 percent on most other items all day.
Customers purchasing tickets can also reserve merchandise using the Shop for a Cause discount any time after Sept. 27 for pickup between Oct. 17 and 23. Macy’s will host special events, prizes and other in-store promotions on Oct. 17 to celebrate Shop for a Cause.
Proceeds from all ticket sales will benefit Visiting Homemaker Service of Hudson County, the area’s leading non-profit provider of home care services for the elderly and disabled.
