Cop arrested for drunk driving
Hoboken Police Det. Kris Wehrhan, 31, Hoboken, was arrested on Wednesday, Sept. 30 just after midnight for driving while intoxicated and refusing to submit to a Breathalyzer test.
Police said Wehrhan was observed allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed and crossing over the yellow lines by 10th and Washington streets and was subsequently pulled over at 214 Washington St.
Police suspected that Wehrhan was under the influence of alcohol, Lt. Det. Mark Competello said, but he allegedly refused to submit to Breathalyzer test and became combative with officers.
Wehrhan was arrested for careless driving, driving while intoxicated, and failure to submit to a Breathalyzer test.
Competello said police usually take blood for diagnostic purposes in these cases to determine blood alcohol levels. He said that information is forwarded to the court.
Wehrhan has been suspended with pay due to the pending charges, police said.
Man found dead in Hudson River
Police confirmed that a man was found dead floating in the Hudson River by Hoboken on Friday, Oct. 16.
A resident in a waterfront apartment spotted a body floating in the river around Fifth Street and Sinatra Drive and contacted police, according to Competello. He said the resident confirmed the sighting with binoculars.
The white male was wearing New Balance sneakers, jeans, and a sweatshirt, Competello said, but his age could not be determined. New York City Harbor Patrol, which has jurisdiction over Hudson River incidents, recovered the body.
Not my telemetry unit!
Union City police arrested Javier Garces, 19, West New York, for driving while intoxicated last week and brought him to Hoboken University Medical Center for blood alcohol testing.
But while in the emergency room, police said Garces allegedly became violent. Hoboken police were called to the scene while Union City police and medical staff attempted to restrain Garces. But Garces allegedly resisted, kicking and flailing his arms, until he knocked over a “data scope spectrum telemetry unit,” police said. Competello could not say how much the machine was valued at.
Garces was charged with criminal mischief in addition to the Union City charge.
Wedding ring swiped
A Hoboken woman hired a professional moving company to assist her move out of an uptown apartment on Saturday, Oct. 3, but later found her diamond and gold wedding band missing. It is valued at $12,600 and was the only item found missing.
She reported the incident to police, who are investigating.
Prescription plan
A man allegedly attempted to pass a stolen prescription for oxycodone at a Washington Street drug store, but his plan was sniffed out by a pharmacist, police said.
Police arrested Darren Marchesani, 21, Edgewater, for theft of a prescription blank, criminal attempt of fraud, and forgery.
Marchesani allegedly tried to pass a stolen prescription for 120 oxycodone pills at Tucker Drugs, Washington Street, but the pharmacist became suspicious and called the doctor listed.
The doctor’s office confirmed that the prescription pad had been reported stolen to the Clark, N.J. police.
