ALL TOWNS — The New York Yankees won World Series No. 27 in their illustrious history Wednesday night, in a 7-3 game over defending champs the Philadelphia Phillies at Yankees Stadium. The Yanks win the series four games to two.
Hideki Matsui was named the World Series MVP after going 8 for 13 with three home runs and eight RBI. Matsui helped win the World Series clinching Game 6 with a home run, a double and a single and driving in 6 runs.
Yankees left hander Andy Pettitte won his 18th career postseason game, a Major League record, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs, four hits and five walks, and notched two strikeouts in a gutty performance. And reliever par excellence Mariano Rivera got the final five outs to close out the victory.
The Yanks won for the first time since 2000 when they beat in five games the New York Mets. They made two other World Series appearances this decade in 2001, losing to the Arizona Diamondbacks and in 2003, losing to the Florida Marlins.
For homegrown Yankees Pettitte, Rivera, Derek Jeter, and Jorge Posada, it’s their 5th World Series while Alex Rodriguez, and recent off-season acquisitions A.J. Burnett, CC Sabathia and Mark Texiera won their first in pinstripes.
It is also the first World Series in the new $1.5 billion Yankees Stadium. And the players dedicated their win to Yankees owner, the legendary George “The Boss” Steinbrenner.
In the loss, several Phillies distinguished themselves including Chase Utley, who tied Yankees great Reggie Jackson as the only players to hit five home runs in the World Series, Carlos Ruiz who batted over .300 and Cliff Lee who pitched his team to their only two wins.
There will be a parade for the New York Yankees on Friday at 11 a.m. in Lower Manhattan, also known as the Canyon of Heroes for all the previous parades held for winning New York sports teams. – RK
