Dear Editor:
I am writing to tell Hoboken residents, particularly the seniors, that I am throwing my support to Beth Mason for Mayor. I don’t always agree with Beth on every issue. In fact, she and I have had many arguments over the years. But I’ll say this about Beth: I respect her, because whether you’re a “BnR” like me or a “newcomer” like her (although I think she’s been here for something like 25 years), she rolls up her sleeves, she puts in the time, she listens to people, and she tries to come up with solutions. This has been especially true on the issue I care most about, which is affordable housing for seniors, like what I have done for two projects here in Hoboken over the years, Columbian Towers and Columbian Arms. Everybody knows that we have an affordable housing issue in Hoboken, but the politicians only want to give it lip service. Beth is different. She understands that older people need a little help in order to be able to live here; she experienced this herself, since her 87 year-old father in law moved to town a few years ago. I want more senior housing in Hoboken, like a lot of us do. I can’t tell you how many times over the years our Hoboken administrations have had opportunities to get subsidized buildings for seniors and they have just flubbed it, for one reason or another. Now, I am not saying Beth will fight for exactly we want. But I am saying that Beth listens to us, and that she will reach out to the community and see what can work for everyone.
We have a lot of tough issues in this town. And you know what, Beth’s never been afraid to take them on, and I know she won’t shy away from this one. That’s why I’m voting for Beth Mason for Mayor on Tuesday, November 3rd, and I ask everyone in town, young or old, to do the same.
Sincerely,
Maurice J. (“Moe”) DeGennaro
