The Middle Seat

12/10/09

I’m not the one with a problem here. I have no issue sitting between two people, no matter how offensive or boring they may be. I can’t expect others to maintain a level of discourse equal to mine. That’s just the way it is and I have to deal with it.
She is the one who needs her space when the two of us go somewhere together. She wants to sit on the end of the long row of seats. If the seats are unreserved, there’s no confusion. I sit in the middle of the row, she on the end. In the middle I can balance what my eyes are seeing. Balance is very important in life.
Now if seats are reserved and we both wind up in the middle, I have to negotiate with the person sitting on the end so she can sit there. It has cost me hundreds of bucks since I’ve been seeing this woman. If this were a rational world, she would be the one doing the talking. But since I am the man, it’s up to me to handle everything, while she stands in the aisle looking unconcerned.
The upside is I get to meet tons of interesting people and she doesn’t. I have no problem sharing an arm rest with them. Which leads to the central seating issue here — my partner HATES relinquishing control of the arm rest. There is simply no compromising with this woman. Once she places her forearm there, that is where it stays. Where you place yours is none of her concern. Unless you’re like me, who will put mine directly on top of hers.
Afterwards, she’ll accuse me of being a misogynist and withhold sex.
In essence, it’s better we stay home and watch a DVD. Soon we will be flying cross country to see her parents, and maybe they can explain why there daughter is pathological.
Point of information – I definitely have to have the window seat. I must see my clouds rolling past. This is a sensible need, not some silly arm rest fetish.
Sometimes I just need to remind myself who is the healthy one in this relationship. – Joe Del Priore
