Happy Holidays, but be careful

To the Editor:
As your sheriff, our personnel is committed in assisting local law enforcement in keeping all in Hudson County safe for this holiday season and throughout the year. We are offering the following safety recommendations for all:
Driving safety – never get behind the wheel of a vehicle and drive with any type or amount of alcoholic beverage consumption – every year impaired and/or drunk drivers cause injury and death to many. This cannot be stressed enough for the safety to all.
Ensure your vehicle is up to standard in maintenance areas – check the battery, belts, hoses, antifreeze, oil, lights, brakes, defroster, wipers and the exhaust system for leaks which may emit carbon monoxide into the vehicle. It takes longer to stop on slippery surfaces so allow enough time to be able to stop safely. Slow down in all weather – speed kills especially in snow and ice conditions – watch for black ice, areas of the roadway that appear black and shiny where your vehicle can suddenly lose traction. It is better to arrive at your destination late but with complete safety.
Holiday shopping safety – first and foremost, your safety and the safety of your family are far more important than any packages or property. When you go shopping it is advisable to take someone with you as there is safety in numbers walking to and from your vehicle in the parking areas. Avoid carrying large sums of cash and never exhibit your cash in public. Be wary in and about ATM areas – if you arrive at an ATM area and there is suspicious activity do not stop and immediately notify your local police. Always protect your PIN and never write this number on or near your ATM card. Keep packages out of sight, preferably in the trunk or other secure area of the vehicle. At home keep presents out of view from home windows or doors and use light timers if you are out to make your home appear occupied. Be wary of persons who identify themselves as delivery or public utility persons and obtain bona fide identifications – when in doubt summon the local police.
On behalf of all in the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, we wish you and your family a happy, healthy and safe holiday season.
