Union City hosts holiday show

Union City Commissioner Lucio Fernandez is a little happier this season. The commissioner in charge of the Department of Public Affairs has been at the center of Union City’s efforts to make art more accessible to the public and to become a haven for artists.
For this holiday season, the city hosted a free-of-charge “Christmas Spectacular” show last weekend at the new Union City Performing Arts Center (UPAC) inside the new Union City High School.

The UPAC, which has a capacity of over 900 seats, was also surrounded by a gallery of art pieces made by local artists. The gallery’s curator for the evening was Amador Mora. Mora is known in the city for coming to events dressed in over-the-top ensembles in bright colors with a fedora hat.

Singers, dancers, acrobats, and Santa

In the “Christmas Spectacular,” singers, dancers, comedians, and even aerialists performed. Alexander Diaz, who has appeared on Broadway, was part of the show, as was recording artist Roxana Blanco.
Not to be missed were the Tap Ole Dance Company, dressed in red and pink outfits. This is not the first time the group has been featured in Union City performances. The energetic group received enthusiastic applause from the audience.
As if that weren’t enough, acrobatic elements made their way into the show. Aerialist performer Guinevere DiPiazza demonstrated her talents, which included practically flying on the stage.
Merrill and Emmett from the Donovan Ensemble brought comedy to the show. The international duo was featured in a story by the Reporter a few weeks ago.
In addition, the big man himself made an appearance. Dressed in red and white with rosy cheeks, Santa Claus was there to say hello to spectators and children who attended the event.
“From music to dance, from flying acts to comedy, this [was] an exciting show for all. It [was] the perfect way to kick off the holiday season,” said Commissioner Fernandez.
The city has implemented plans to promote the season to residents and shoppers. Mayor Brian Stack has been reminding all that the city enjoys a 3.5 per cent sales tax in its business district. In addition, the city is hosting holiday events for children and seniors.
