Jets get green light

Locals prepare for big game

If you haven’t noticed, the last time the Jets were in the Super Bowl, Broadway Joe Namath was at the helm defeating the heavily favored Baltimore Colts 16 to 7 in one of the most memorable Super Bowl upsets of all time.
The Jets might not be playing for a Super Bowl ring just yet, but fans are excited about the chances of another huge upset when their team takes on the Indianapolis Colts in the playoffs this Sunday. Local sports bars promise to be packed for the big game, with drink specials, free wings, and more.
“It would be fun to watch them win,” said Liz Young of Hoboken. A huge football fan, Young comes to the Shannon Lounge in Hoboken every Sunday for the games and said she wouldn’t watch the upcoming Jets game anywhere else. “The Shannon is hands-down the best place to watch football in town,” she said. According to Young, there are even “table speakers” to make sure you get to see and hear your favorite team.

Cathy, a bartender at The Shannon, 106 First St., said she has become a huge football fan since coming to America 17 years ago.
“I love watching football here,” Cathy said. According to the bartender, the Shannon has 16 plasma TVs and gives out free wings on game days.
“It was packed last Sunday,” Cathy said, “so I can’t even imagine what it’ll be like this Sunday.”
Steven, a huge Jets fan, believes his team has a good chance against the highly favored Indianapolis Colts.
“Of course, the Jets have a shot to win,” said Steven, from Long Island. “The Jets have always been in last place in their division since I’ve been born. I can hope.” According to Steven, there are great places to watch the game in Long Island too, but most of the bars will be “way, way too packed.” He said he might end up at a smaller, local bar to watch the game.
“It’s going to be a huge game,” Steven said. “I’m definitely going out somewhere. Even Bills fans are rooting for the Jets this year.”

Gambling man

But not all local football fans are so optimistic.
“If I were a gambling man, which I am,” said Brian of Hoboken, “I would venture to say the Colts win 28 to 13.”
Brian usually watches his football at Buskers, 94 Bloomfield St., or Blackbear Bar and Grill, 205 Washington St. in Hoboken. But for this Sunday’s game, Brian said he’d probably be at Buskers.
“I imagine I’ll be at Buskers,” Brian said. “There’s full sound and a great atmosphere.”
Still other local football fans were just ready to kick back and enjoy a great game come Sunday.
“[Jets Quarterback Mark] Sanchez is really cute,” said Hoboken resident Colleen. “I’m glad the Jets are still playing. I’ll be enjoying the game, eating and drinking with friends.”
If nothing else, a lot of local Jets fans are happy to see their team make it this far into the playoffs and are looking forward to another successful season next year.
“Winning might be a stretch,” said Ronny of Jersey City. “But even if they don’t win this Sunday it’s still a Cinderella story for the Jets. Nobody thought this was going to happen.”
