Stray cat saviors

Dear Editor:
Kindly allow me to express my utmost gratitude to the Hon. Mayor Brian P. Stack and Board of Commissioners for appointing members to the Feral Cats Advisory Committee on January 19th. Furthermore, I appreciate every member on the Committee as they seek to improve the quality of life for feral cats under their care, and in the wider sense, using their talents and commitment for the betterment of the city through the path of service and compassion. In addition to Richard Censullo, M.P.H., the members are Ana Mas, Miguel Fernandez, Laura Robinson, Mercedes Garcia, and Lauren Battista. Most of the members are already tending to the needs of the street and stray kittens and cats. Indeed, they have been doing so, unsung heroes and heroines, for years.
A mountain of praise is due, I believe, to Ms. Joyce Fetterman, whose determined efforts saved the life of Mr. Mangled Paw, a story featured last year in this newspaper. It’s been estimated that the cats in Hoboken alone number at least 15,000 and less conservative numbers – even higher – for nearby Jersey City. If Union City even approaches those numbers in abandoned cats and kittens in need of rescue, the Committee has a lot of work to do. We will need the help of every concerned citizen and the Stack administration as we seek to address the feral cat problem in our neighborhoods. Goodwill to all.
